Nature has always held a special place in my heart, so when the opportunity arose for our company to support nature conservation through a hiking trip to Masungi Georeserve, I couldn’t have been more excited. Not typically the hiking type, I knew that a quiet adventure with nature would be the perfect way to immerse in its beauty and contribute to its preservation.

On a Saturday morning, 25 of us, led by our general manager, embarked on a journey along the Legacy Trail in Baras, Rizal. Little did we know that this adventure would not only provide us with a chance to give back to the environment but also leave us with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of nature.

To ensure our safety and to make the most of our experience, we were accompanied by knowledgeable forest rangers. These dedicated individuals are the true heroes, serving as caretakers and agents of restoration for our precious forests. Their expertise and passion were evident as they guided us through the trail, pointing out unique flora and fauna along the way. Their commitment to preserving nature inspired us all, and we eagerly absorbed their wisdom.

When embarking on a hike, we were constantly reminded of “Leave No Trace.” This rule encourages outdoor enthusiasts to minimize their impact on the environment and preserve the natural beauty of the trails. As you traverse the hiking trails, be mindful of your surroundings and strive to leave them as pristine as you found them. Avoid leaving any litter or waste behind, and make sure to properly dispose of any trash you encounter. Stay on designated trails to protect fragile ecosystems and wildlife habitats. Avoid disturbing plants and animals, and refrain from picking flowers or disturbing rocks and natural formations. By following this rule, we can ensure that future generations can enjoy the same awe-inspiring beauty of the great outdoors.

As we ventured deeper into the trail, we were captivated by the sheer beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. Lush greenery embraced us, and the ambient sounds of the forest provided a soothing soundtrack to our journey. Each turn revealed a hidden gem, whether it was a bamboo-lined uphill or a picturesque view of the surrounding landscape. The physical exertion was outweighed by the moments of awe and inspiration.

The trail offers a diverse terrain, incorporating natural dirt paths and sections with concrete/stone steps to enhance safety and accessibility for visitors of all fitness levels and in varying weather conditions. Along the route, you will find convenient amenities including rest stops and benches, as well as well-maintained restrooms at the jump-off point and lunch stop area.

Our mission for the day was to engage in tree nurturing activity and contribute to the restoration of our forests. Each step we took was filled with a sense of purpose and determination to make a positive impact. The moderate workout aspect of the hike added an extra layer of thrill, as we knew we would be rewarded with breathtaking views at the summit.

You have the option to go barefoot but socks are recommended. You will find pillows that can be used to enhance your comfort while lying down on the rope net areas. We had a nice time to relax and take in the beauty of the surroundings. It is an oasis of tranquility amidst nature, providing a unique and comfortable spot to rest and rejuvenate along the trail.

More than just a hike, this experience brought us closer as a team. The shared challenge and accomplishment fostered a deeper bond among our team members. As we climbed together, encouraging and supporting one another, we built a sense of camaraderie that extended beyond the office walls. Conversations flowed freely, laughter filled the air, and we shared stories and experiences that brought us closer together. It was a time of connection, creating memories that would forever be etched in our hearts.

The jump off point is at KM 46 Marcos Highway, located at the first ranger station across the road from the main Geopark.

Legacy Trail
The Legacy Trail can last 4-5 hours depending on the physical capabilities of the group. We spent almost 1.5 hours climb going up, 45 minutes of restoration activities, 1 hour of food & rest, 30 minutes going down). All trail visits require a park ranger to guide guests through the trek providing a deeper understanding of the area.

Who should try it
The Legacy Trail is best suited for people who are interested in directly participating in reforestation, regular and beginner hikers, companies looking for CSR activities and barkadas who are looking for a day nature bonding away from the city.

What to wear
Visitors are advised to come prepared for the hiking and forest restoration activities at Masungi Georeserve.
1. Wear comfortable attire suitable for these activities, such as long pants or leggings, loose or dri-fit shirts, and non-slip, closed-toe shoes designed for hiking.
2. It is advisable to wear light jackets and long sleeves as there may be contact with grass.
3. As the weather can get hot, especially towards noon, we suggest wearing arm sleeves, a cap or hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun’s rays.
4. There may be occasional drizzles or even thunderstorms. To prepare for these conditions, we recommend bringing extra clothes to change into after your activities and raincoats as a precautionary measure.

Things to bring
1. It’s wise to pack extra clothes, as weather conditions can change unexpectedly during your trek.
2. Staying hydrated is crucial, so remember to bring your own reusable water bottle or tumbler filled with enough water to last the duration of the activity. Please note that water supply in the area is limited, so it’s important to come prepared.
3. At the ranger’s station located at the jump-off point, you can borrow walking sticks to help you throughout the trail.
4.Pack your gadgets in a dry bag inside your backpack in case of rain. This will ensure that your electronics remain safe and protected throughout the hike.
5. Don’t forget to include insect or mosquito repellent in your hiking essentials. The great outdoors often come with their fair share of bugs and insects, and applying a reliable citronella spray can minimize the risk of insect bites and potential discomfort.
